Th e Na t i o n a l R e c o n c i l i a t i o n Commission commenced public hearings on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 at Old Parliament House in Accra. The opening ceremony was h o n o u r e d wi t h g r e e t i n g s f r om Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Alex Boraine, former chair and deputy chair, respectively, of the South
African Truth and Reconciliation Commission; Mary Robinson, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; and Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah, forme r member of the Nigerian Human Rights Violation Investigation Commission, among others. Appropriately, there was no detectable partisan flavour to the event; the only government member to speak was the Attorney General, whose remarks were detailed and balanced.
