Oversight Responsibility of Parliament: The Role of the Committee On Government Assurances
15 September, 2003
The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) organized a two-day workshop on "Oversight Responsibility of Parliament: The Role of the Committee on Government Assurances" on June 7-8,2002. fhe workshop was part of the USAID-sponsored project aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the Third Parliament of the 4'h Republic in the discharge of its conslitutional obligations. The Committee on Government Assurances is charged with pursuing all assurances, promises and undertakings given by Ministers on the floor of the House from time to time in response to questions from members of Parliament. The workshop was held against the background that since its inception in 1997, the Committee has received scant attention and been underutilized despite its relative importance to the structure of governance. lt has made relatively little impact in its oversight responsibility of the Executive in terms
of ensuring that the Executive fulfills its assurances, promises and undertakings.
