Project Info

Ghana’s territorial borders are marked with significant challenges that affect border management and threatens security risks since the country is located in a sub-region noted for trans-border crimes and insecurity. Notable among these challenges are inadequate personnel to patrol the borders; inadequate logistics including firearms for security officers; unavailability of border fences; nature of settlements on border areas that makes it easy for cross border relations; smuggling and transnational criminal activities along the borders and quiet recently, the surging threat of violent extremism that is gradually making its way to the northern borders of the country from Burkina Faso. Coupled with these, there are existing frosty relationships in border communities between security agencies and the community members over what is often a thin line between residents’ livelihoods and what constitutes criminality. Again, there is a low level of security consciousness and awareness among citizens in general and by extension residents along border communities.

This project aims at creating unity-facilitating strategies to improve the relationship between security agencies and officials stationed at selected borders, traditional and political leaders of border communities, citizens, and CSOs among others to enhance the fight against trans-border crimes.

The objectives of the project include;

1. Foster collaboration among stakeholders to end smuggling and human trafficking
2. Establish workable dialoguing sessions for residents and security agencies
3. Ensure greater awareness of the dangers of smuggling and human trafficking
