Democratization and Women in Africa – Progress, Stagnation or Retreat

The African Union adopted the African Protocol on Women’s Rights as well as the Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in 2004. The founding instruments of the African Union
also include a commitment to a 50/50 gender parity for all the organs of the AU. In 2006, Africa got its first democratically-elected female President, Mrs Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia.
