The Rising Cost of Politics in Ghana: Are the Revelations from the NPP Flagbearer Race Worth Reflecting on, or It’s Politicking as Usual?

On Saturday, November 4, 2023, New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates will be going to the polls to elect a flagbearer for the 2024 general elections. Many have analyzed the NPP candidates’ dynamics and chances. This blog, however, focuses on the interesting and sometimes wild revelations about vote buying and monetization of the process that have not been formally denied during the campaign periods and their impact on the democratic development of the country.

From intra-party politics to general election commercialization, costs rise. Our campaign fundraising laws ought to be established and implemented. Election stakeholders should be concerned about Ghanaian political parties’ internal financial operations to prevent “political entrepreneurs” from hijacking governance by spending money on parties and candidates.
