Law Students Urged to Take an Active Role in Ghana’s Constitutional Reform Process

Asante doc

Dr. Kojo Pumpuni Asante, Director of Policy Engagement and Partnerships at the Ghana Center for Democratic Development, has entreated students of the Ghana School of Law to get involved in the ongoing constitutional review process. Speaking to the students, Dr. Asante emphasised that law is a tool for social change and that law students should take advantage of the ongoing review process to lead the charge for the necessary amendments to be made.

Dr. Asante made these remarks when he joined as a panelist on the 2nd Edition of the Law, Leadership and Life Beyond the Bar Webinar Series hosted by Maame Ekua Otenewaa Oduro, Vice President of the Ghana School of Law, UPSA Campus.

The webinar, themed: “Constitutional Reform and the Ghana School of Law Student: Knowledge, Responsibility and Public Engagement,” provided a platform for informed discussion on constitutional reform. It also examined the role of law students in public engagement and civic responsibility beyond the classroom, highlighting how their knowledge and initiative can influence national governance.

Panelists also encouraged students to seize the opportunity to build their skills, enhance their capacity, and gain experience that will support their professional growth and development.

Dr. Asante joined other panelists, including Noah Adamtey, Lead Researcher on the Constitutional Review Committee (2025), and Oliver Baker Vormawor, Private legal practitioner and Policy Strategy Advisor at Democracy Hub.

The discussion allowed panelists to delve into the proposals made by the CRC, assess the feasibility of some recommendations, examine the process of implementation, and educate law students on the CRC stakeholder engagement process.

Addressing participants, Dr. Asante took the opportunity to elaborate on the interventions by the Center and particularly on the CSO-CRC Platform, designed to coordinate the efforts of civil society organizations in advocacy, monitoring, and facilitating public input into the constitutional process.

The webinar reinforced the view that constitutional reform is a collective responsibility and highlighted the pivotal role of young legal minds in shaping a more informed, inclusive, and participatory democratic process in Ghana.
